Today’s trade tree is a reader-submitted request. You, yes you, can submit requests either via the link in the left-hand sidebar or by doing it to me on the Twitter @tradetrees. Our request comes from @bje79 who writes:
@tradetrees i’d like to see a Von Hayes tree (from Indians perspective), starting with Hayes => Baller/Franco/Trillo/Vukovich/Willard => etc…
@tradetrees great! I’m a phillies fan, and the 5 for 1 is infamous, but doesn’t look like CLE turned those 5 into much
bje79 is right, the Indians did not turn Von Hayes into too much for their organization. This is an example of quantity over quality. The only two names I knew before researching this tree were Julio Franco and Oddibe McDowell, and I think I only knew McDowell from Chris Berman calling him Oddibe “Young Again” McDowell not any baseball accomplishments.
Hayes would go on to have a fairly successful 9 years in Philadelphia. He was a member of the (losing) 1983 World Series team, made an All-Star game and led the leage in doubles and runs scored in 1986. As a Phillie (Philly?) he hit .272/.363/.427.
The most interesting thing about this tree, to me anyway, is George Vukovich. He was purchased by the Seibu Lions of the Japanese Pacific League. He played there for two years - 1986-1987 - and won the Japanese Series both years.
