The 2007-08 offseason was a big one for the Twins. Right after Thanksgiving ‘07, the Twins sent starting pitcher Matt Garza and starting shortstop Jason Bartlett, along with minor leaguer Eduardo Morlan, to the Tampa Bay Rays. Three months later, they sent 2-time Cy Young winner* Johan Santana, who’s contract demands were more than the Twins were capable of matching, to the NY Mets.
Two of those directly decended from these two trades were traded today to the Orioles. As you can see, the Twins have gotten relatively little in return for an ace pitcher (injuries not withstanding), a pitcher with a no-hitter, and a MLB-caliber shortstop.
Editor’s Note: I don’t want to be too much of a homer around here and focus on the Twins too much. Please use the link in the sidebar, or Twitter (@tradetrees), to suggest trades to look into.
*The case is made by some Twins fans Johan should have had three straight, but Colon won in 2005.
